Week 1

Wednesday, January 23. Course introduction and syllabus discussion. Information regarding UCS account. The course home page URL is <http://www.ucs.ull.edu/~jwf7377/index.html>. When you have opened your UCS account, e-mail me using the e-mail link found on the English 365 home page. In this e-mail, give me a litle of your computing background and expertise (or lack thereof). If you e-mail me from class, you will have to do so by using the Web Mail Log In.

Friday, January 25. Read Chapter One: An Introduction to Technical Writing of the online manual and the Personal Web Site project page.

Week 2

Monday, January 28. Look at the Sample Home Page and read the Protocols for Creating and Setting up a Basic Home Page. Workshop: Basic Home Page.

Wednesday, January 30. You must have your UCS account and e-mail set up by today. Read Chapter Two: Purpose and Audience of the manual. Workshop: Basic Home Page.

Friday, February 1. Read Chapter Three: Planning of the manual. Workshop: Basic Home Page.

Week 3

(Mardi Gras February 4-6)

Friday, February 8. Read Chapter Four: Stylistic Desiderata of the manual.

Week 4

Monday, February 11. Workshop: The Basics of Technical Writing and Other Works in Progress (OWIP).

Wednesday, February 13. Basic Home Page checkpoint (preliminary and ungraded).Your home page should be up on the UCS server. If time permits, I will be reviewing each student's Web site in class; if it does not, I will look at them from home. Consider it a work in progress that you can continue to tweak during the semester. Read Chapter Five: Document Design and Layout and Chapter Six: Ethical Responsibilities of the manual.

Friday, February 15. Read Chapter Seven: Letter of Application and Résumé of the manual and the Résumé and Letter of Application project page. Workshop: The Basics of Technical Writing and Other Works in Progress (OWIP).

Week 5

Monday, February 18. Read and print both Appendix I: The Manuscript (ms) & Camera-Ready (c-r) Formats of the manual and the English 365: Document Submission Requirements. Workshop: Writing a Letter of Application and Résumé and OWIP.

Wednesday, February 20. Read Chapter Eight: Describing a Process of the manual and the Instructions project page. Workshop: Writing Instructions and OWIP.

Friday, February 22. Checkpoint for Letter of Application and Résumé. You must turn in hard copy of both pages and a copy of the position advertisement at the beginning of the class. Workshop: Writing Instructions and OWIP.

Week 6

Monday, February 25. Read Chapter Nine: Proposals and Chapter Ten: Reports of the manual and the Proposal project page. Workshop: Writing Memos, E-mail, and OWIP.

Wednesday, February 27. Workshop: Writing Proposals and OWIP.

Friday, February 29. Checkpoint for Instructions. You must turn in hard copy of your Instructions at the beginning of the class. Also, after you have made appropriate changes (if necessary), be sure to ftp a copy of your camera-ready instructions to your public_html file and put a link to that file on your home page so anyone can download the file.

Week 7

Monday, March 3. Read the Process Analysis project page. Workshop: Writing a Process Analysis and OWIP.

Wednesday, March 5. Checkpoint for Proposal memo. This checkpoint carries no credit points. You must turn in hard copy of your memo at the beginning of the class. Workshop: Writing a Process Analysis and OWIP.

Friday, March 7. Workshop: Writing Reports and OWIP.

Week 8

Monday, March 10. Read Table and Chart project page. Workshop: Writing Reports and OWIP

Wednesday, March 12. Workshop: Tables and Charts and OWIP.

Week 9

Monday, March 17. Read Chapter 12: P Online Publication and Chapter 14: Oral and Visual Presentations of the manual and the PowerPoint Presentation project page. Workshop: OWIP.

Wednesday, March 19. Checkpoint for Table and Chart. You must turn in hard copy of the Table and Chart at the beginning of the class. Workshop: PowerPoint and OWIP.

Wednesday, April 2. Begin PowerPoint Presentations. Checkpoint for PowerPoint Presentations. Mandatory attendance.

Friday, April 4. for PowerPoint Presentations. Mandatory attendance.

Week 12

Friday, April 11. Workshop: Proposal Progress Report, collaborative writing, and OWIP.

Week 13

Monday, April 14. Checkpoint for Proposal Progress Report. You must provide hard copy of the Proposal Progress Report at the beginning of the class. Read Chapter Eleven: Critical Interpretations and Assessments of the manual and the Critical Report project page. Workshop: Collaborative Writing.

Week 14

Monday, April 21. Continue working on the collaborative projects. Workshop: Collaborative Writing and OWIP.

Wednesday, April 23 .Read the section of the Policy Sheet dealing with the class portfolio. Workshop: Collaborative projects and course Portfolio.

Monday, April 29. Workshop: Collaborative writing and OWIP

Wednesday, April 30. Checkpoint for Brochure. You must provide hard copy of the Brochure (one for each group) at the beginning of the class. Workshop: Course Portfolio and OWIP.

Friday, May 2. Checkpoint for Critical Report due. You must provide hard copy of the Report (one for each group) at the beginning of the class. Workshop: Course Portfolio and OWIP.
Week 16

Friday, May 9. Course portfolio and final examination due. Portfolios, manila envelope containing your marked and graded checkpoint drafts, and your final examination must all be turned in at the beginning of the class. None will be accepted past this deadline. Final checkpoint for Basic Home Page (graded).

Note

The Final Examination for English 365-4 is scheduled for Thursday, May 15, from 2:00 p.m until 4:30 p.m.. I will be in my office (HLG 230) during those hours.You may retrieve your portfolio and final examination and get your final course grade.
